Mermaid Beach The crew from Mermaid Beach’s ABC Radio have solved the mystery of the suburb’s secret pineapple gardener.
For those not in the know, the garden bed along the middle of the Gold Coast Highway at Mermaid Beach has been planted with pineapple plants.
Nobody was claiming responsibility for the action, with the State Government and the City of Gold Coast at loggerheads over who is supposed to responsible for the landscaping along the strip.
It appears former Gold Coast resident Simon Fox, who now calls New South Wales home, was behind the guerrilla gardening.
“On the Gold Coast there is enough concrete, I was insisting that we try and soften something that is a main thoroughfare in an area we lived in,” he told ABC.
“My wife helped me at the time, but I did it just because I wanted to make the place look better in an affordable way and the pineapples are a quirky little plant.”
“It took my wife and myself a few months at the time. She would pass me the plants and I would plant them … and we ran back and forward and gave them a couple of drinks. And that’s it. They were on their own.”
Next time you are driving down the highway, keep an eye for them just south of Markeri Street.
